減圧症は、身体の組織や体液に溶けていた気体が、環境圧の低下により体内で気化して気泡を発生し、血管を閉塞して発生する障害の事である。
急性症状としては関節痛が典型的である。重症例では呼吸器系の障害（息切れ・胸の痛み）やチアノーゼが見られる場合もある。生涯にわたる神経系の損傷等、重篤な後遺症を招くケースも少なくない。
ごく軽い減圧症では、ごく微細な毛細血管のみが閉塞し、これらの急性症状が見られない場合もあるが、この程度の減圧症でも長期的には骨の組織壊死を招く場合がある(wiki)
